Privacy

This is a static site with no accounts, no tracking and no analytics. The short version is that we do not know who you are and have arranged things so that we cannot find out.

Effective 1 July 2026

The short version

We do not set tracking cookies. We do not run third-party analytics. We have no advertising pixels, no social embeds, no session recording, no fingerprinting and no user accounts. If you read this site and never write to us, we hold nothing about you beyond what any web server unavoidably logs, and we do not use those logs to build a profile of anybody.

What we collect

  • Server logs. Our host records requests — IP address, timestamp, requested path, user agent — for operational and security purposes. These are retained for 30 days and then deleted. They are not analysed to profile readers.
  • Email addresses, if you subscribe. Held for the purpose of sending the newsletter you asked for, and for nothing else. See the newsletter page.
  • Correspondence, if you write to us. Letters, factual challenges and documents you send are retained as editorial records. If we print a letter we print an initial, a surname and a city, and only with your consent.

What we do not collect

Names, unless you give one. Locations, beyond a city you volunteer for a letter signature. Reading history. Search terms — the search page runs entirely in your browser against a static index file, and what you type is never transmitted anywhere. Health information of any kind, and we ask readers not to send it.

Cookies

None that we set. There is no consent banner on this site because there is nothing to consent to. See the cookie page for the full detail, including what an advertiser’s site may do if you click through to it.

Third parties

  • Font and icon delivery. Typefaces are loaded from Google Fonts, which means your browser makes a request to that service and it will see your IP address. We use no other third-party asset host.
  • Advertising. Sponsor units are static HTML served by us. There is no ad network, no bidding, no pixel and no impression tracking. If you click a unit you leave this site, and the destination’s own policies apply.
  • Email delivery. Newsletter sending is handled by a provider under contract, which processes addresses only to deliver our mail and is not permitted to use them for anything else.

Legal basis and your rights

Where we process personal data we do so on the basis of your consent (newsletter), our legitimate interests in operating and securing the site (server logs), and our legitimate interests in journalism (editorial records, including correspondence). Journalistic processing carries specific exemptions in a number of jurisdictions and we rely on them where they apply — principally so that a company cannot use a data-access request to discover what we are working on before we publish it.

You may ask what we hold about you, ask for it to be corrected, ask for it to be deleted, or withdraw consent to the newsletter at any time. Write to standards@compoundjournal.com. We respond within one month.

Children

This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 16.

Changes

Material changes to this policy will be dated here and noted in an editor’s letter.
