Editor’s letter
This is a small publication reporting on a very large market, and the discipline that follows from that is selection. We cannot cover everything, so we cover the parts where a document exists and can be read: a certificate, a docket, a chromatogram, an appraisal, a batch record. Where no document exists we say so, which is itself a finding and frequently the most important one in the piece.
In this number, 60 pieces across 8 departments, with 110 further dispatches filed from the newsroom and 30 contributors on the page. Our analytics department has a standing rule that irritates people, and it is right to. A purity figure without a gradient, a wavelength and an integration threshold cannot be compared with any other purity figure, and reporting it as though it can is not neutrality — it is passing on a claim while pretending to have checked it. We would rather print "method not stated" than a number we cannot situate.
